Trademark Protection for Startups: A Practical Guide

The name you ship with is not always the name you can keep. A working sequence for early-stage brand protection.

Startups often treat trademarks as a Series A chore. By then the name is on the product, the domain, the pitch deck, and a handful of app stores — which is exactly when a confusingly similar senior mark becomes expensive.

Search before you print the cards

A proper clearance is not a Google search and a glance at the Trade Marks Registry. It is identical, similar, and phonetic searching across the classes you occupy now and the classes you will occupy when the product expands. It is also a look at the United States, the EU, and any market named in the next eighteen months of the pitch.

File where you will actually sell

India-first companies still benefit from an early U.S. filing if the United States is in the go-to-market plan. The reverse is also true. Madrid can be efficient; it is not automatic strategy. Classes, specifications, and use requirements differ, and a lazy specification is a gift to a future opposer.
